The MCP23S17-E/SS devices provide 16-bit general purpose parallel I/O expansion for SPI applications. The serial interface of this product differs from the MCP23017 device.
There are multiple 8-bit configuration registers for input, output and polarity selection in MCP23S17-E/SS devices. By writing to the I/O configuration bits (IODIRA/B), the system host can enable I/O as input or output. Input or output registers hold input or output data. The registers can be read by the system host.
